Firstly, let's cut through the jargon so normal people can understand what the fuss is all about. It's actually very simple..
Picture a golf ball and 'the cup' (ground hole). Imagine if the golf ball was too large to sink into it. Now, cosmetic products and their ingredients have molecular structures larger than the skin pore itself and therefore wouldn't be able to penetrate into the skin to reach the lower layers called the dermis. In order for any physiological change to take place within the skin, it is vital for the correct ingredients of a smaller molecular structure to enter through the cells and proceed to fulfill its purpose in the dermal layer. This is where your skin creates collagen and elastin which forms the structure of the skin. We lose these two very important tissues every single day of our lives and if nothing is done to protect them and stimulate our fibroblasts to produce more of it, you'll age away like there is no tomorrow..
So, in a nut shell...
Cosmeceutical skincare products are scientifically formulated with potent active ingredients (small ball, big ground hole) to deliver what is needed for the skin and create change to the organ from the inside out.
Cosmetic skincare (anything from the shop like Sainsbury's, Tesco's etc.) can only 'feed' the epidermis layer (top layer) which is only dead keratin cells (big ball, small hole). They usually contain silicone as a base to give you that soft pampering lush greasy feel that psychologically makes us feel like something is 'working' but in reality and scientifically it's doing absolutely nothing.. (Sadly)
The most frustrating part for me as a skin practitioner is knowing how marketing brands advertise the 'latest or hottest' new face care which cost an absolute fortune at times and may cause unnecessary skin issues that could have been prevented in the first place.
Me,
I use a Swiss brand called CliniCare cutting edge formula in salon which is a pharmaceutical skin range that contains highly potent active ingredients to treat specific skin conditions from severe acne to everyday anti- ageing.
Remember, you don't need to have problematic skin in order to use good cosmeceutical skincare. There is something for everyone!
